Which is better ? Breathwork or Pranayama?

Breath work has become all the rage in the wellness world over the past 5 years and for good reason. 


It works. 

However, did 21st century wellness gurus & hippies make this up from thin air?

Absolutely not.

Modern Breathwork is a sensationalized & stylized make over that comes from the Yogic science of Pranayama. 

It's referred to as a science because it takes years to master it due to its depth.
How in-depth?

So in-depth, it is an entire limb in the 8limbed yogic system of Ashtanga Yoga. 

Pranayama translates to, "life force extension," and points to learning to control & amplify the life force. 

This is a long term practice & aim which provides compound benefits physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually. 

Modern Breathwork however is designed for specific goals like releasing trauma, processing emotions, and having peak somatic experiences. 

Given how repressed our society is in general with trauma & emotions, I find this to be a well intentioned and helpful practice. 

However, for those looking intentionally control and master their state of mind, nervous system, and amplify their life force & creativity....

I encourage traditional practice of Pranayama. 

In November, I will be holding a short online intensive that will share the fundamentals of classical pranayama and variations of practices. With this foundational practice you will be experience the energy of your 20 year old self and regulate your nervous system like the true sage & mystic you are becoming.
